This hotel features Venetian-style rooms and a rooftop cocktail bar with a great view.
Hotel Carlton On The Grand Canal is located in Venice's Santa Croce district, near the train station of Santa Lucia, the Cruise Terminal/Maritime Station, and the parking areas at Piazzale Roma. As the name suggests, it's directly overlooking the Grand Canal. There is a Vaporetto (water bus) stop not too far nearby.
The hotel is elegant from the outside as well as on the inside but dated and not maintained well with visible signs of wear and tear on furniture and facilities. Many guests have complained of old and moldy smell in the rooms.
The rooms are equipped with air-conditioning, satellite TV, a minibar, and a private bathroom with a hairdryer. Higher-class rooms have panoramic terraces opening up towards the Grand Canal or the hotel's patio garden. The interior design with Murano glass lamps and antique furniture is in line with the 18th-century style of Venice.
Noise is a big problem at the hotel due to the bad combination of constant Grand Canal traffic, a noisy rooftop bar, thin walls, and old-style windows.
La Cupola Restaurant offers an innovative menu of Venetian dishes with seasonal local ingredients and an emphasis on seafood. The Top of the Carlton Sky Lounge & Restaurant, located on the fourth-floor terrace, provides cocktails and a lively atmosphere. This is a double-edged sword though, if you aren't one for bars and music - the noise penetrates the building until late.
The breakfast is basic but good and tasty. Gluten-free options are available.
Other amenities include a free entrance to the casino, luggage storage, babysitting, and ticket reservations for the theater and concerts.
The meeting room can accommodate up to 60 people for various conferences and meetings.
Hotel Carlton on the Grand Canal is perhaps not as luxurious as you would expect from a 4-star establishment. Various flaws and shortcomings can spoil your stay. The good central location can be very important to some but arguably it's not enough to overcome the negative sides, especially given the extremely high price tag.
Check-in is available from 14:00 and check-out is required by 11:00.
