In a unique location on a small island is this charming hotel with rooms overlooking the lagoon.
Isola di San Servolo - Centro Soggiorno is located on the island of San Servolo near the main islands of Venice. To reach it, use a vaporetto for a 10-minute ride from Piazza San Marco, though keep in mind it runs every hour and only between 7 AM and 12:30 AM. If you want to reach/leave the hotel outside this time, you need to use a rather expensive water taxi. Once you arrive though, the location is away from the noise and all the tourists of Venice, surrounded by a quiet, lush park on this small 300-meter-long island. The hotel building used to be an insane asylum - an important note for some travelers. The island also houses a museum and hosts various art exhibitions.
The hotel offers air-conditioned rooms with views of either the lagoon or the park. The AC frequently has problems and is often a point of complaint from guests. Each room has access to free wifi and includes a flat-screen satellite TV, a private bathroom, and a mini-fridge. There is a kettle, but no cups and no tea/coffee, so you may start wondering why you need it in the first place.
The on-site restaurant, "Robe da Matti," which is open for lunch and dinner, is practically your only choice for dining unless you go to central Venice, the costs of which can quickly mount up. The menu is small but thankfully the food is good and the setting is charming. For lighter fare or refreshments, go to the San Servolo Café, open from morning to early evening. Breakfast is mediocre and limited.
Overall, Isola di San Servolo - Centro Soggiorno is adequate enough if you want a different Venetian experience away from the crowds. If you want to be detached and on a small island, then you may be willing to overlook its flaws. However, most travelers would find much better value for money on the main islands of Venice.
