Three star hostel with dormitory-style rooms and a great location in uptown New York.
HI New York City Hostel is situated a short 10-minute walk from Central Park, in the Upper West Side of Manhattan. The nearest subway station is at 103rd Street, just a block away on Broadway.
This Victorian-style building hostel offers both shared dormitories and private rooms. As a guest, you will get access to free Wi-Fi and an individual locker. There is air conditioning in every room and dorm. Common areas of the hostel include the spacious outdoor patio and garden area, ideal for socializing and relaxation. The game room with a pool table and a TV is another great place to meet people. There is a laundry room on the second floor as well as a kitchen and a theater room in the basement. The bathrooms are consistently clean and will probably exceed your expectations for a hostel bathroom. You can get fresh new towels whenever you need them. The elevator is old and slow, so be prepared for a wait or to use the stairs.
While there isn't an on-site restaurant, the hostel features a large, fully equipped self-catering kitchen with 36 burners where you can prepare your own meals. Alternatively, there are many local bakeries, pizzerias, and pubs in the surrounding area. The hostel does not provide breakfast but you can take advantage of the free coffee and tea in the common areas.
As a hostel, you can expect some optional community events such as daily tours and pub crawls, or comedy shows in the in-house theatre room.
Overall, the HI New York City Hostel is a good budget option with some minor inconveniences, which given the price, seem negligible. Great value for money in the Upper West Side.
